For many decades Nancy Calef has been creating Peoplescapes, oil, sculptured characters and applied objects on canvas, addressing cultural, political and spiritual issues facing society. By juxtaposing people in recognizable places and situations, each painting weaves together a story about contemporary life, filled with layers of detail, symbolism and humor. Calef highlights struggles with race, global warming, toxins in our food, the corruption in politics, financial and pharmaceutical industries. Her technique has evolved to repurposing computer monitors, motherboards and internal parts to create musical characters, a reminder of technology’s dominating presence in all aspects of our lives.
Calef is the author of Peoplescapes — My Story From Purging To Painting (2015, Babu Books); her illustrated memoir (149 color images) is an around the world tale of transcendence and healing from childhood trauma through creativity. www.nancycalefgallery.com
